H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, has said that the achievements of the National Media Council, NMC, are in accordance with the federal government's objectives and its operational and strategic plans.
The NMC achieved a 92 per cent marking in the performance programme of the Cabinet office for all federal institutions, indicating the record of the NMC in achieving its strategic plans and the federal government objectives.
Sheikh Abdullah, who is also the Chairman of NMC, said in his introduction to the NMC's 1st Annual Report for 2013, that the Council had launched last year a number of initiatives and achievements to support social-linked activities, in particular related to health, educational, art, social, humanitarian, sports and environmental institutions and centres, as well as offering patronage to and supporting coverage of intellectual and academic fora and conferences designed to develop the country's institutions and social organisations.
Sheikh Abdullah added that the Council has achieved notable success in its strategic plan for the previous three years, depending on its own capabilities and human resources, which had contributed to developing its work. He added that its plans were distinguished by positive participation at all administrative levels, including three strategic goals, which the Council seeks to achieve through a variety of initiatives, partnerships and activities.
Sheikh Abdullah said," We are very keen that the NMC will continue steadily to develop its tools, policies and systems to implement the federal government strategy and meet the aspirations of clients and all segments of the society." The report included a general brief on the Council, which was established in 2006. It also highlighted the NMC's vision to reach an international standard in the media field and to highlight the country's achievements inside and outside and to safeguard the provision of all administrative services for clients.
The report also outlined NMC's organisational structure, special activities and missions for the previous three years, which included a number of successful initiatives deemed satisfactory by the Cabinet office.
The first report of the National Media Council for the year 2013 has given special attention to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, which commenced its transmission on 18th June 1977, and today receives transmission from all Arab News Agencies and most of the International News Agencies through various modern means of communication. It has also signed co-operation and news exchange agreements with more than 20 Arab and International agencies.
WAM is a member of the Group of Arab Gulf Co-operation Council News Agencies, the Federation of Arab News Agencies, FANA, the Islamic News agencies Union, the Pool of Non-Aligned News agencies, in addition to its membership in News Agencies World Congress.
WAM transmits its news in Arabic, English and French languages daily from 08.00 am until 01.00 am, UAE time. Since it was commenced its transmission, WAM provides coverage of around 80 - 90 percent of the total local and official news in the United Arab Emirates.
During 2013, the news agency covered more than 36332 events, and provided photograph and television services of many activities.
The National Media Council, NMC, also oversees "uaeinteract.com", which is one of the oldest sites launched by the U.A.E. in line with the vision of the wise leadership to highlight the country’s achievements and contributions of convey the true image of the State all over the world. The content is available in six languages which include Arabic, English, French, Spanish, German and Korean and the number of visitors in 2013 reached to 2,293,542 million.
