The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said it is high time for the negotiating teams to reach an agreement to address the humanitarian and economic situations in Yemen. "The humanitarian and economic situations need an urgent solution. The parties should build on the unprecedented international support for a peaceful solution and work to reach an understanding soon," he said in a press release by his office carried by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
On the ongoing peace talks, the statement noted that the three parallel committees, recently formed by the negotiating teams of the government held morning and afternoon session today. In the political committee meeting, the government delegation elaborated on the legal elements of its vision for the transitional stage. All parties emphasized the need for a clear-cut timeline.
A UN technical expert presented to the security committee a detailed roadmap entailing a sequence steps for the implementation of the post-war security arrangements based on the experience of other countries. Meanwhile, the committee on prisoners debated proposals for the short-, and long-term mechanisms for releasing the prisoners held by the belligerent parties.
The negotiators stressed the need to reach a viable, sustainable and mutually-acceptable solution in keeping with the reference points of the peace talks, namely the GCC initiative, the outcomes of the National Dialogue, and UN Security Council Resolution 2216. The negotiating parties are to convene a plenary session Friday morning to evaluate the progress made by the three parallel committees and decide on the next steps.
