A state of controversy still dominates the political parties
Algeria - Rabea Khreis

A state of controversy still dominates the political parties in Algeria after the end of the deadlines for the filing of requests of candidacy for the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on May 4. The political parties, including the ruling party, faced increasing challenges to control their electoral lists by which they will run for the parliamentary seats.

The Algerian ruling National Liberation Front faced waves of demonstrations and resignations among its leading members who expressed protest against the party’s electoral lists dominated by the ministers of the Algerian government and businesspersons.

The domination of businesspersons of the electoral lists of the Algerian ruling party came to reverse the statements issued by the party’s Director General Jamal Ould Abbas who pledged to confront the influence of businesspersons on the electoral lists. The formation of the party’s lists pushed many of its members to organize demonstrations in all over the country.

In Algeria’s Baskara governorate, a large number of people organized a demonstration before the party’s headquarters to express their protest against the decision to nominate former Minister of Finance Mohamed Jallab on the top of the governorate’s electoral list.

In the same context, a large number of demonstrators have rallied before the headquarters of ruling party at Namaa governorate, saying that the party’s electoral list reflects the disrespect of the party’s slogans based on “renewal and dependence on young people”. The demonstrators expressed their refusal to nominate Soliman Saadawy for the parliament, saying that he is not committed to the party’s principles and decisions.
