Amman - Iman Abou Kaoud

Courses have been temporarily suspended at Jordan’s Jarash University following a massive brawl, reportedly caused by a tribal dispute. Angry students trashed an off-campus cafeteria, which his owned by a student’s relative, in retaliation for an earlier incident in which the caterer stormed university premises with men carrying bludgeons and knives. The assault prompted security forces to use tear gas to disperse rioters. Security forces closed roads between Amman and Irbid for half an hour to ease the risk of escalation. University sources said authorities had suspended classes until Wednesday. Jarash University is the only higher educational institution in Jordan’s Jerash province, located around 50 kilometres north of the country’s capital, Amman.
