Omar Sharif: I fear for Egyptian actresses

Egyptian star Omar Sharif is worried about Egyptian actresses being whipped, in case the new constitution will implement an 'Islamic Law' approach. Sharif added: " 'Provided that art shall not be inconsistent with Islamic Law' as the constitution says, I believe that freedom of creativity will be affected." The actor also said in a statement to MBC.net that this elastic sentence makes him concerned about the future of Egyptian art, which might be similar to that of Iranian, where a woman was whipped when uncovered her hair while acting. Meanwhile, Sharif agreed to return to the international cinema with the two new films 'Crossing the Desert' and 'Ports of Call,' which are to be shot this month. The actor said he recently rejected dozens of offers for important roles. Sharif added that the reason behind the offers is actually a lack of international stars of his age. Moreover, the actor stated that international cinema “is not like the horse of the government in Egypt, that when it gets older, they shoot it.”
