Manama - Arab Today

Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa said today that the GCC's and Coalition Backing Legitimacy in Yemen efforts aim to regain stability to the entire country and prevent it from going into civil war.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was holding a joint press conference with GCC Secretary-General Dr. Abdul-Latif Al Zayani as part of the conclusion of the 37th GCC summit. He said that the coalition attended to the calls of the legitimate authority in Yemen rather than standing on the side of party in Yemen against the other. In fact, the Minister added, the coalition was against any foreign intervention in Yemen that could damage the country.
On hosting UK Prime Minister Theresa May in Manama and the US presidential elections, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that GCC leaders are clear in their commitment to enhancing partnerships with international allies. This was reflected in the UK Prime Minister's participation in the summit and the joint communique that was issued.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain added that the same applies to the GCC relationship with the United States, noting that ties with Washington was never based on a particular administration. He added that the GCC is looking forward to working with President-Elect Donald Trump, highlighting that GCC-American relations are based on the security and stability of the region.
On ties with Iran, the Minister expressed his hope that Iran changes its foreign policy. He added that Iran needs to convince its neighbors that its open on its neighbor if it's to convince the international community about its nuclear programme. He stressed that backing terrorism in the Arab World must stop in addition to respecting the sovereignty of states. If these things happen, the GCC will respond to Iran, the Minister said.
For his part, Al Zayani stressed on the importance of Yemen for GCC members. He added that efforts since 2011 has focused on finding a peaceful process that ends the bloodshed and stops Yemen from going into civil war, which is the core of the GCC initiative on Yemen.
Al Zayani stressed that the GCC was committed to improving humanitarian conditions in Yemen. He highlighted the vision of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Custodian of the Two Holly Mosques, which included the re-building of Yemen if a peaceful solution is reached and integrating the Yemeni economy in to the GCC's economy.
He noted that the GCC has been working with the United Nations since 2011 and stressed the backing of the efforts of United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed in finding a peaceful political solution in the context of the GCC initiative and that implements resolution 22/2016.
