The UN Security Council
New York - Arab Today

The Arab States Group in the United Nations has reiterated call a proper representation of Arab countries in the UN Security Council (UNSC).
The Arab countries are seeking proper representation of all geographic and regional blocs in the UNSC, both in the permanent and non-permanent categories, Kuwait's Ambassador to the United Nations Mansour Al-Otaibi said at a meeting for intergovernmental negotiations for reforming the UN Security Council held as part of the UN General Assembly 71st session.
Though the Arab group represents a population of nearly 350 million and 22 states, or 12 percent of the UN members, it has no permanent seat in the UNSC, he regretted, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
On fears that the expansion of the UNSC membership could negatively affect its effectiveness, Al-Otaibi stressed that the effectiveness of the UNSC should be determined by its work mechanism not by the number of its members.
He also called for a comprehensive and multi-faceted reform for the most powerful international organization. He said partial reforms to work mechanisms or membership would lead to the aspired change, KUNA reported.
