
India said Wednesday it would continue with its nuclear programme without any interruption, irrespective of decision taken by other countries such as Germany and Japan to end their dependence on nuclear energy. "As far as India is concerned, the country is not energy rich and its electricity demand is huge and growing which requires all sources to be deployed optimally," Minister of State for Personnel V.Narayansamy told the law makers in the parliament. "Nuclear power is a clean energy option and has huge potential to provide long term energy security in a sustainable manner," he added. The minister said the current installed nuclear power capacity of India was 4780 Mega watt which will reach 10,080 MW by the year 2017. Another proposals envisage start of work on 19 new reactors with a capacity of 17400 MW, V.Narayansamy said.
