Cambodian court upholds sentence of man convicted in acid attack

A Cambodian appellate court says it has upheld the conviction of a man in the death of a woman and her 3-year-old granddaughter following a 2008 acid attack. Mon Ton, 33, had told the court he was not involved in the attack on Thom Saroeun, 46, and her granddaughter, Thai Srey Thim in the Angkor Chey district, The Phnom Penh Post reported Monday. The attack was allegedly ordered by Ton's mother, Mao Yan, because her husband was having an affair with Saroeun. Ton was convicted in 2009 and received a 16-year prison sentence. Yan and Chok Heng, whom the Cambodian Daily identified as her nephew, were convicted in absentia and sentenced to 18 years and 16 years in prison, respectively. They remain at large.
