8 killed as train derails in India

At least eight people were killed and 50 others injured when a passenger train derailed in western Indian state of Maharashtra on Sunday morning. Police said the incident occurred in a tunnel near Nidi village when the engine of the Diwa-Sawantwadi passenger train and four coaches jumped off the tracks at around 10 a.m. local time. Five ambulances have been on rescue mission on the spot, the police said, adding that the injured were rushed to Roha area for medical treatment. Railway officials said relief and rescue trains were sent to the site from Thane and Mumbai. Traffic on Konkan railway network in Maharashtra has been paralyzed, said a central railway official in Mumbai. The incident came just days after a bomb blast was triggered in the Chennai railway station last week. In another incident, eight coaches of a passenger train had derailed near Ambedkar Nagar in northern state of Uttar Pradesh on April 28.
