
Four miners died inside a coal pit when it caved in in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district Wednesday, said local media Thursday. The incident took place in Garegittim, about 400 km from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya, said Indo-Asian News Service. "Four people died inside a coal pit after it caved in. Three of the bodies have been retrieved from the coal pit," the news service quoted district police chief Davis Marak as saying. A criminal case has been registered against the mine owner who went absconding following the incident. Mining accident takes place from time to time in India due to lack of enough safety measures and protection of miners. Four workers were killed last November after the ceiling of an underground mine of Coal India Ltd. collapsed in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.
