Fourteen people died Sunday when a bus drove off a road and plunged into a ravine in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, highway police told AFP. The bus, carrying 50 people, was traveling from the city of Curitiba to Rio de Janeiro when it left the road in a wooded area near the city of Sao Paulo and fell down a gully some 50 meters (165 feet) deep. Thirteen people were killed at the scene, with one more victim dying in hospital, said a spokeswoman for the Regis Bittencourt highway. Many injured passengers were taken to medical centers, though the number of people hurt was not officially confirmed. Some 22 ambulances scrambled to the scene of the accident, which occurred around 2:00 am (0400 GMT).
