1 killed, 9 injured in twin blasts in southern India

At least one woman passenger was killed and nine others sustained injuries in twin blasts at a main railway station in southern Indian city of Chennai Thursday, a senior police officer said. The twin blasts have been termed as terror attacks by the Chennai Police who also claim to have arrested one suspect in the case. "The blasts took place on Guwahati-Bangalore Express train stationed at the Chennai Central station at 7.30 a.m. (local time). The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Swathi. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious," the officer said. Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Mishra said the blasts appeared to be of low intensity. The state government of Tamil Nadu has announced a compensation of 1 lakh rupees (2,000 U.S. dollars) for the family of the deceased. A probe has been ordered into the blasts, the police officer added. India is in the midst of general elections, which began on April 7 and will end on May 12, with results due on May 16.
