A delegation from the General Secretariat of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council has visited the UAE-Jordanian camp for Syrian refugees, "Mrajeeb Al Fhood", in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The visit comes within the framework of a voluntary initiative to offer books and stationery to Syrian students in the camp in order to support and promote education and reading practices, and is concurrent with President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan announcing 2016 as the "Year of Reading".
During the three-day visit, the staff of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council also visited a number of neighbouring camps and the field hospital inside the camp. They were accompanied by the relief team from the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, who handed over in-kind supplies and more than 300 books on various topics for different age groups. The supplies included books for the camp's library, the school library, and stationery for the students for the next academic year. Several entities contributed to the initiative, including Etihad Airways, which supported the volunteer trip.
The delegation also presented supplies to a number of Syrian refugee families in the camps in Al Azraq area, including clothes, food and blankets.
Ali Mohamed Al Dhaheri, Camp Director, and the UAE relief team, received the delegation, who listened to a briefing on the camp and the shelter, education, health and other services provided by the Emirates Red Crescent. Afterwards, it toured the camp facilities including warehouses, the library, hypermarkets, wedding hall, school, park, medical centre, and the workshop.
The delegation also visited the UAE-Jordanian field hospital in the governorate of Mafraq, and listened to an explanation about the medical services provided by the Emirates Red Crescent team.
