
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) urged member states to adopt recommendations on allocating 6% of national spending for agricultural sector and food security.
The food security crisis that emerged over the past decade highlighted the importance of maintaining agricultural development and food security, Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs Hameed Opeloyeru said.
He added that OIC member states account for 29% of farmlands across the world.
The 7th OIC Ministerial Conference on Food Security and Agricultural Development in n Astana, which is slated for April 26-28, will tackle the current agricultural situation of the OIC countries, Opeloyeru stated
For the purposes of food self-sufficiency and security of the Muslim world, the Conference supported the need for possible joint venture agro-projects, under commercial as well as Government arrangements within OIC mechanism, for production of cereal grains and development offood reserves and food banks in order to cater for the vulnerable segments of the population of the Muslim world, with related distribution arrangements.
