The Newly-elected Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abbadi, chosen by the Iraqi Parliament for a four-year term on Monday, will face different challenges including Iraq's security and the war against the Islamic State known as (IS).
Al-Abbadi, who was born in 1952, received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Technology in Baghdad in 1975. Later on, he continued his studies for Masters and PHD degrees at the University of Manchester in the UK, where he received his PHD in electronic and electrical engineering in 1980.
The Premier lived in London for years during the era of Saddam Hussein, and later, he returned to Iraq during the US invasion in 2003, where he worked as Minister of Communications, then was given the post of Advisor of former Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki in 2005 and ended up becoming an MP.
Al-Abbadi has registered a patent in London in rapid transit system in 2001. Moreover, he held many scientific seminars in the UK, and has made researches on Islam's point of view on democracy and extremism.
As for his political life, Al-Abbadi has joined Al-Dawa Party in 1967 and became head of the Party in the UK in 1977. In 1979, the Premier became member of the Party's executive leadership, later heading the Party's Middle East bureau in Beirut in 1980.
Al-Abbadi was elected Chairman of the Economy, Investment and Reconstruction Committee in 2005, nominated as MP in 2006 and was named First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives.(end) mhg.ag
