Cairo - Arab Today

The Arab League received an official memo from Egypt nominating its former Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit for the presidency of the 22-member body.

The AL has notified all members states about the Egyptian nominee, Arab League Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Bin Heli said in statements.

Aboul Gheit is the only Egyptian nominee, Bin Heli said, adding that the senior Egyptian diplomat's nomination will be discussed during Thursday's extraordinary AL council meeting at the level Arab foreign ministers.

The meeting will be chaired by the UAE.

In case he is elected, Aboul Gheit will succeed the incumbent Secretary General Nabil el Araby.

In February, El Araby announced that his term will end in July 2016, stressing that he will not seek a second term.
