Manama - Arab Today

The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO) in an effort to spread the standardisation culture and protect consumers, environment and public health via relevant education, studies and research. The signing ceremony was conducted at AGU’s premises in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

President of AGU, Dr Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al Ohali, who signed the agreement on behalf of the University, highlighted during the event the importance of this MoU, stating that it’s a step forward towards bolstering collaboration ties with specialised organisations in the GCC region.

Dr Al Ohali praised the role being played by GSO in various standardisation activities and monitoring their conduction as well as abide by them in collaboration with Standardisation agencies in the Arabian Gulf region. He underlined that GSO’s efforts have contributed to increasing the efficiency of the GCC states’ economies and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens, “especially at the present time where economic and political blocs require special attention to the issues of standardisation and quality in products and services”.

On his part, Mr Nabil bin Amin Al Mulla, President of GSO, who signed the MoU on behalf of the Organisation, affirmed that the Standardisation Organisation aims at assisting the GCC to achieve its objectives specified in its Articles of Association and the Gulf Economic Agreement and the GCC Customs Union to standardise the various standardisation activities in the GCC countries. “Meeting such objectives will add to the development of the GCC states’ production and service sectors, to the growth of trade among them, to the improvement of consumer protection. It will help also in improving the environment and public health, and the encouragement of the Gulf agricultural industries and products to support the Gulf economy and maintain the gains of its member states.”

Al Mulla said that the signing of this agreement with AGU is a real activation of the motto of the Organisation “A Sustainable Partnership” which aims to build relations and achieve integration with long-standing scientific and academic bodies, stressing that the AGU with its distinguished reputation would be a breakthrough for the Organisation in the field of research and studies in standardisation of specifications and quality as well as ISO issues.

“This agreement aims to establish a framework for training and capacity-building in the field of standardisation in the GCC region in cooperation with the Centre for Training and Continuing Education at AGU. It will contribute to spreading the culture of standardisation and specifications and quality for both traders and consumers
