Agriculture Minister Essam Fayed said Friday that the cabinet approved Egypt's joining of the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).
The move was taken during the weekly cabinet meeting under Prime Minister Sherif Ismai within the framework of the state's interest in the advancement of the agriculture sector to contribute to national economy and achieve comprehensive development and self-sufficiency.
The decision to join the convention came after holding a workshop to consider all the viewpoints on joining the convention.
Fayed said the joining in this convention would allow many agricultural investments, job opportunities, along with protecting local corps and increasing production for achieving self-sufficiency.
He added that the UPOV allowed for sharing expertise and benefiting from the member states’ scientific, technical, and economic experiences.
