Four rapists were referred on Thursday to the Grand Mufti to review their death sentences.
The case goes back to 2006 when nine people in Kafr el-Sheikh province kidnapped a woman and raped her at a gun point.
The nine defendants were sentenced to death by the criminal court but they appealed the ruling to the court of Cassation which ordered their retrial.
The court set December 20 for a final verdict.
Under the Egyptian law, the criminal court has to refer death penalty cases to the Grand Mufti before passing the death verdict.
