Rabat - Arab Today

Spain has promised to support Morocco before the European Union (EU) in exchange for increased security on the Moroccan borders of Ceuta and Melilla in a recent diplomatic agreement between the two countries.

According to Spanish news outlet, El Pueblo de Ceuta, diplomatic sources have stated that the agreement has prevented a new immigration “crisis.”

Moroccan border patrol blocked the entry of almost 600 Sub-Saharan African migrants without the intervention of Spanish border guards on Friday, according to ABC España.

According to El Pueblo de Ceuta, Spanish officials “promised” the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs that, “[Spain] would do everything possible to defend Moroccan interests to the EU on the agricultural agreement in exchange for maintained police collaboration with the Spanish security team.”

Recently, Morocco and the EU have entered into a dispute over the Euro-Moroccan Agricultural Agreement. According to, El Pueblo de Ceuta, Spanish courts ruled the Western Sahara as “sacred territory,” after statement from the Polisario front.

Although the time and place where the agreement was established has not been disclosed, El Pueblo de Ceuta affirms that the agreement was established after the border crossing attempts on February 17 and 20, in which more than 850 immigrants entered Spain.
