Senior legislator raps double standards in dealing with various states' WMD

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi denounced the double-standard policies shown by the world powers towards different states' stockpile of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), including their approach towards Israel's atomic arsenal and Syria's chemical stockpile. In a meeting on Wednesday with the visiting French senators Joelle Garriaud-Maylam and Jean-Yves Leconte, the senior Iranian parliamentarian described the Israel's clandestine nuclear weapons stockpile as an example of the western powers’ double standard vis-à-vis the campaign against the WMDs. Boroujerdi stated that Iran hails the Syrian government’s cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and United Nations on the elimination of its chemical weapons as a courageous move, and maintains that the Israeli regime must also destroy its undeclared nuclear arsenal. Israel is believed to be the sole possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle-East with over 200 ready-to-launch warheads in its stockpile. Syria officially became an OPCW member on Oct 14. The Hague-based UN partner is responsible for the implementation and supervision of the international Chemical Weapons Convention. The OPCW is responsible for elimination of the chemical weapons in Syria.
