Budget for the police has been increased by Presudent Joko Widodo to make the force able to modernize its equipment, improve means and facilities as well as infrastructure.

"Under your leadership budget for the police which stood at Rp44 trillion in 2014 has now reached Rp84 trillion in 2017 meaning it has doubled," Indonesia Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said at a ceremony to mark the 71st police anniversary at Monas Square on Monday.

Due to the budget hikes "construction of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Building that has been started in 2004 and hampered for 13 years is, under your leadership, expected to be finished by the end of this year", he said.

Besides that construction of the 17 stories Crime Investigation Department building is now under construction and God willing is expected to be finished next year, he said.

General Karnavian expressed thanks to President Joko Widodo for his decision to increase remuneration for the police. He said remuneration hike in 2015 was only 33 percent while other institutions had reached 100 percent but in 2016 it already reached 53.4 percent.

"Thank God in 2016 you raised the performance allowance for members to 53.4 percent," he said.

On the occasion General Karnavian reaffirmed the polices commitment to continue improving the forces professionalism and media management.

He said the success in the police improvement so far has been recognized as seen in various surveys by polling institutions revealing improvement in the public trust to the police.

"Polri (Indonesia Police) does not exvlusively belong to Polri. Polri belongs to us all including the government and the people. In view of that support from all parties are needed to meet the expectations of the government and the people," he said.

President Joko Widodo who led the ceremony had praised the success of the police in carrying out their tasks with support from all community elements.

"Challenges in the future will be heavier especially in the current global era. The success of the police is inseparable from the support of all national elements and the community," he said.

On the occasion President Joko Widodo called on the police to increase their performance in dealing with primordial issues, transnational crimes, terrorism, narcotic drugs and cyber crimes.

He also called on the police to prepare themselves for regional elections in 2018 and presidential election in 2019.

He hoped the police could really give their best service to the people, the nation and the state.(*)
