A Philadelphia police officer was critically wounded Tuesday morning after a traffic stop turned into a car chase and then into a physical confrontation. Officials said Edward Davies, 41, was in Temple University Hospital with what was described as life-threatening injuries, WCAU-TV reported. Those included a perforated kidney and artery. The suspect, Eric Torres, 31, of Philadelphia allegedly reached under Davies' bullet-proof vest to shoot him in the abdomen at close range. Other officers on the scene arrested Torres. Police said Torres was pulled over because of a broken taillight Tuesday morning. After handing over his license and registration, he allegedly drove away but crashed his car soon after. Torres then ran into a convenience store where he got into a struggle with officers, including Davies. Mayor Michael Nutter said the gun, a .45 caliber Glock, was reported stolen last year from a police officer in another jurisdiction. Investigators said that a search of Torres' home turned up another weapon, ammunition and about $50,000 worth of heroin packaged for sale. Torres has a long arrest record, including five arrests for allegedly assaulting police officers.
