Peru's President Ollanta Humala Wednesday swore in three new ministers, all women, bringing the total number of women in his cabinet to nine. The three new appointments include Magali Silva at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Diana Alvarez at the Ministry of Culture and Monica Rubio at the Ministry of Social Development and Inclusion. Silva is a well-known economist. Alvarez is former general secretary at the Ministry of Justice and Rubio is a trained economist and expert in assessing social policies. The new appointments bring to nine the number of women in Humala's cabinet, including Foreign Minister Eda Rivas. Humala will begin his third year in office on July 28 amid domestic strife caused by an indefinite strike by medical workers, labor protests and a political stalemate in Congress over the nomination of candidates to the Supreme Court of Justice, the central bank and the Ombudsman's Office.
