US President Barack Obama has ordered sanctions against Russia in response to the Russian government's "aggressive harassment of US officials and cyber operations" aimed at the US election, dpa reported.
A White House statement said the sanctions are against nine entities and individuals, including two Russian intelligence services and three companies that provided material support to one of the intelligence services' cyber operations.
The State Department also declared "persona non grata" 35 Russian intelligence operatives, giving them 72 hours to leave the United States in addition to shutting down two Russian compounds in the United States used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes.
