US Secretary of State John Kerry called German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to discuss the situation in Syria and efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire.
The two top diplomats also talked about ways to secure the prompt delivery of humanitarian assistance and resume political talks to end the civil war in Syria, the State Department said in a statement.
Kerry also expressed his deep condolences after the terrorist attack on Monday at a Christmas market in Berlin.
He offered US assistance in the investigation in whatever capacity would be helpful, the statement said.
