Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo
Warsaw - ArabToday

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo has written a letter to members of European parliament (MEPs) explaining the lack of Poland's support for Donald Tusk on his possible second term as European Council president, it was announced Wednesday.

In a letter published on the Polish Chancellery website, an explanation for the country's support for Jacek Saryusz-Wolski over Tusk was included.

According to Szydlo, Tusk abused his authority and interfered into Polish internal affairs, therefore showing lack of neutrality. She said Tusk overstepped his European powers and used his authority as the head of the European Council to intervene in national disputes.

Earlier in January, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, said that Tusk "was in favor of solutions that are extremely harmful to Poland." These include financial penalties for European Union member states that do not accept a quota of refugees. Kaczynski added that such a person cannot obtain Poland's support.

Szydlo in the letter said Saryusz-Wolski was a person who possessed the required qualities and has more than 40 years of experience in European integration.

Tusk's term as the president of the European Council will end on May 31. On Thursday and Friday, the EU will hold a summit in Brussels to make a decision whether to choose Tusk for a second term of office.
