Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy held a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. During the meeting, the two chief executives discussed issues of mutual interest as well as Iran’s nuclear program. President Rouhani reviewed bilateral as well as regional and international development with Rajoy. The Spanish prime minister, for his part, said President Rouhani’s election has created new hopes in the international community. Earlier, Rajoy in a message to Rouhani in August expressed the hope that the relations between Tehran and Madrid will further develop during President Rouhani's tenure. Spanish Ambassador to Tehran Pedro Antonio Villena Perez in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Ministry Director-General for Western Europe Abolqasem Delfi submitted Rajoy's felicitation message to President Hassan Rouhani after his election as Iran's new president. In his message, the Spanish prime minister referred to the age-old ties between the two countries, and expressed confidence that Iran and Spain can expand and promote bilateral relations. He also announced his country's readiness for cooperation with Iran to further develop ties between the two countries.
