Iranian MP: US military intervention in Syria can backfire on region

The US military intervention in Syria could backfire on US interests as well as stability in the region, Chairman of Iran's parliament Foreign and National Security Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Monday. The self-restraint exercised by US President Barack Obama serves the US and Israeli interests, Boroujerdi, who is in Lebanon for an official visit along with a parliamentary delegation, said in a press conference, indicating that any political miscalculation in this regard could negatively backfire on the entire region. He reiterated his country's refusal of military intervention in Syria, and condemned any use of chemical weapons. On his visit to Syria, where he met with President Bashar Al-Assad, speaker of the house, and a number of ministers, Boroujerdi explained that his visit focused on three main issues; defense of the resistance under Syria's supervision, opposition to any military action against Syria, and full condemnation over usage of chemical weapons. Furthermore, the Iranian MP expressed his hope in elimination of obstacles standing in the way of forming the new Lebanese government, affirming his country's support of the national unity in Lebanon, as well as Lebanon's sovereignty and stability. Earlier today, Boroujerdi met with Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri and discussed latest developments in the region, specifically the Syrian crisis. He is scheduled to meet President Michel Suleiman, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour on Tuesday.
