UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond
London - Arab Today

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Tuesday played down suggestions of a UK possible frontline role in fighting Daesh in Libya.

"Libya does not want, and Britain is not planning a combat mission," Hammond told a session of the British House of Commons.

"A combat mission or airstrikes in Libya would trigger the convention of a vote in the House of Commons," he added.

The Libyans have not yet asked for a training mission, but the UK does stand ready to offer a training and technical mission there, Hammond said. "So we are not sending combat troops but we are ready to send training personnel if and when they ask."
