France, Germany supportive of new Libyan government

French and German Foreign Ministers on Saturday said their countries will support the new Libyan government.

Jean-Marc Ayrault, French Foreign Minister and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in the capital city of Tripoli and held meetings with the unity government.

In a joint press conference with the deputy head of Libya's presidency council, Ahmed Maiteeq, the Ayrault confirmed that France is willing to support the new Libyan government, especially in the areas of security and army training.

He praised "the great courage of the presidential council," stressing that the government of national accord has the full support of Europe and that improving the security in Libya is improving the security of the neighboring countries.

Steinmeier called on all Libya parties to follow the political reconciliation, and confirmed Germany's support to Fayez Serraj's government, as well as its assistance to end the chaos in Libya and to fight against the IS.

With Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni's arrival last week, the recent visits of European officials are seen as support to the UN-backed government.
