US missile defense system incentive for arms race

The US global missile defense system will lead to an arms race, Interfax quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying on Friday.
"It's a dangerous error to consider the missile defense system to be solely a defensive system that doesn't threaten anyone, but only strengthens international and regional security," Russian Defense Ministry official Alexander Yemelyanov said at a Russian-Chinese briefing on missile defense held on the sidelines of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly.
"The Russian Federation is convinced that unlimited deployment of the U.S. missile defense system is a serious challenge to global security, an incentive to arms race and a threat to the whole mankind," he said.
