Darfur - Abedalgoum Ashmeag

The Head of Darfur’s regional authority El-Tigany Sisy met with the US ambassador in Khartoum Joseph Stafford to discuss the recent developments in Darfur’s peace process. Stafford stressed his country’s commitment to supporting the peace process in Sudan and providing the required assistance to execute the Doha Agreement. He explained, “We support Doha's agreement to achieve peace, good governance, and development in the region to achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people.” Stafford praised the committee formed by the Sudanese President Omar Bashir to make contact with armed movements to convince them to participate in the current negotiations. He also stressed the need for finding common ground to serve the peace process. Darfur Governor Hamad Ismail called those involved in armed movements to return to negotiations and focus on building the country. Ismail praised the current state of security after security forces conducted expanding operations to isolate and suspend the activities of armed movements. He revealed that Sudan’s vice president Ali Taha would visit Darfur to begin a number of developing projects. Ismail pledged to support the peace process, adding that the region had witnessed positive developments after signing the Doha agreement.
