Khartoum – Abedalgoum Ashmeag

Sudanese authorities imprisoned Brigadier General Abdel-Aziz Khaled on Monday after he returned from the Ugandan capital, Kampala, following meetings between his Armed Revolutionary Front and other Sudanese opposition parties. They met there to sign the controversial anti-government document, the New Dawn Charter. Khaled has claimed he signed the Charter to suspend an ongoing war in Sudan. The Armed Revolutionary Front’s cooperation with other opposition groups may lead to the overthrow of Sudan's ruling regime, he said. The Sudanese authorities also arrested Nasserite Party chairman, Gamal Idreece, and leading members of the Intasar el-Akly party on their return from Kampala. Khaled established the Sudanese Coalition Troops, the military wing of Sudan’s opposition, that fought a series of military campaigns against the government in 1994. He attended military college with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and was excluded from the national army in 1989.
