Buenos Aires - Arab Today

Tens of thousands of people marched on the Argentine capital Buenos Aires to protest the economic policies of the conservative government and demand higher wages in line with runaway inflation, according to local media reports.

Organized by trade unions as well as political and social groups, the "Federal March" saw activists set off for the capital from several provinces on Wednesday to demand answers of president Mauricio Macri's conservative government.

Among the key demands are salary increases to match the current inflation rate of 45 per cent. The unemployment rate of 9.3 per cent was another trigger for the mass protests.

Union leaders have threatened a nationwide strike should the government not meet their demands, prompting Labour Minister Jorge Triaca to issue an invitation for talks next week.
