Luxor - Mohammed Al Adaisi
Hussein Chmeit, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Addis Ababa in 1996, has announced he is standing in upcoming parliamentary elections as an independent. Chmeit, who is a member of the Building and Development Party, claimed while he respects his party, running as an independent nominee increased his chances of winning. “Citizens’ trust in political parties and Islamist groups has not been shaken,” he said, “despite the rumours and lies propagated by the media.” Chmeit claimed Islamists looked set to take a majority in the elections.
