Damascus – Agencies

Activists reported that 100 people were killed in Syria by the security forces on Monday, primarily in Homs and on the outskirts of Damascus, where Assad’s troops clashed with the rebels’ army. Other activists reported that a new massacre took place in a city of Homs. The General Authority of the Syrian Revolution announced that among the dead of Monday there are five children and six recruits; six family members' bodies have been found slaughtered and shot to death. The army Forces violently bombarded the town of Al-Zawya Mountain in Idlib and clashes took place between the regular military forces and the free army, activists said. Others reported that inhabitants of Sakba, in Damascus' countryside, are calling for aiding the injured in the town, which was heavily shelled by tanks. "We counted more than 225 tank shells; communication, electricity and water were cut off from the town", the General Authority of the Syrian Revolution added. Meanwhile, in Ayn Tarma, Hmouria and Rebeen, opposition groups reported that the security forces raided the area amid heavy gunfire. Moreover, Assad's troops besieged the city of Yabroud and placed snipers on the roofs of the buildings. Civilians were killed and more than 17 were injured. In Rastan, Baba Amr and Khalidiya neighbourhood and palaces in Homs, several died and many were injured as well, as a result of a heavy shelling and gunfire, activists said. Meanwhile, Syria's opposition called for a "day of mourning and anger" on Tuesday after almost 100 people, most of them civilians, reportedly died in spiraling violence ahead of a U.N. Security Council showdown. Moreover, In a statement on its Facebook page, the opposition Syrian National Council deplored the international community's lack of "swift action" to protect civilians "by all necessary means." On Monday, "the regime waged a bloody campaign of massacres and terrorism that killed 100 Syrians including women and children... in Homs, using tanks and heavy weapons to bomb neighborhoods," it said, referring to the central city. It called, in coordination with activists, for a "day of mourning and anger in the country to commemorate the victims of savage massacres," urging mosques and churches to support the cause with prayer calls and ringing bells. The SNC, the most representative group opposed to Assad, reaffirmed the "people's determination to fight for their freedom and dignity," stressing they "will not give up their revolution, whatever the sacrifices." "The regime is taking advantage of the cover provided to it by some regional and international parties to escalate its crackdown," it added, in a likely reference to Iran and Russia.
