Lebanese Patriarch supports Syrian refugees

Lebanon’s Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi has called for social and humanitarian support for Syrian refugees living in the country, after fleeing violence in their home country. The religious leader slammed Lebanese politicians “who are paralysing the country because of the situation in the neighbouring country." Speaking during a sermon at mass in Bkirki on Sunday, al-Rahi said the Lebanese people should prayer for war and violence to stop in Syria, as the 22-month conflict shows no sign of abating. "We urge the fighters who are causing destruction and death to stop the killing," al-Rahi said. He described "heroic" attempts by some politicians to get different parties to the negotiating table "to reach peaceful solutions to the Syrian crisis.” The Patriarch also urged international leaders "who are involved in fighting in Syria by sending money, weapons or ammunition to either the regime or the opposition” to halt their “bad deeds.” "They will be held responsible by history," he added. Lebanese politicians supporting or criticising Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should also stop “bets on developments in Syria,” the Patriach claimed. "Those same officials are causing emigration and a lack of trust in our nation.”
