Egyptian president upgrades army chiefs

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi has promoted military commanders in show of support for the army amid rumours of tensions between the Islamist leader and once ruling generals. The promotions come after the Egyptian press and Britian's Guardian newspaper reported that a fact finding committee Morsi had appointed found evidence of military abuses during the 2011 revolt that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Morsi's spokesman said in statement he promoted three major generals to lieutenant generals in a meeting with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which was in charge after Mubarak's ouster and before Morsi's election last June. Leader of Air Defence Abdel Moneim, Air Force Commander Younis el-Masry and Naval Forces Commander Osama el-Jendy have all been promoted to the rank of general. The president has also expressed frustration at perceived attempts to tarnish the military’s image, following reports of abuses against protesters, according to presidential sources.
