Egyptian military spokesman Col Ahmed Mohammed Ali has denied that Chief of Staff Sedki Sobhi was planning to launch an offensive against supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood at 1630 hrs on Friday. The 'zero hour' threat was posted on social media website Facebook earlier on Friday, and the moment came and passed without any army attack. Speaking to reporters, Ali said that that the "false information" was aimed at breaking the image of Egypt's military institution. He explained that Sobhi does not have any official pages on social media websites, with all official statements appearing on the army's official page. Ali urged media organisation to resort to official sources for their news. The military spokesperson reiterated that Friday's protests were about coming together and confronting "terrorism and violence."
