Bashir vows to achieve peace in Darfur

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir says his government would take the necessary steps to achieve peace and stability in the war-torn western region of Darfur. He was speaking after chairing a high commission meeting for peace in Darfur. During the meeting Chairman of Sudan's Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) al-Tijani al-Sisi briefed the Sudanese president on the recent developments in the province. Sisi told reporters that tribal conflicts are the biggest challenge in South Darfur, adding that authorities had managed to clamp down on armed movements. Meanwhile, the head of the African Union and United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Mohammed Ibn Chambas has urged all parties to set aside their differences and give priority to humanitarian values. He said that the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan provides a great opportunity to achieve peace in Darfur.
