Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) Moussa Faki Mahamat has welcomed the signing of the Palestinian reconciliation agreement in Cairo on Thursday.

Faki commended Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and all other concerned stakeholders on this achievement.

He expressed the AU’s deep appreciation to Egypt for its crucial role in facilitating this agreement and encourages it to pursue its efforts.

He said he looks forward to the full implementation of the agreement, in particular the steps agreed upon to enable the Palestinian Government to assume its responsibilities in Gaza. He also encouraged the Palestinian stakeholders to continue to work tirelessly towards furthering their unity.

The AU chief stressed the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He reiterated the AU’s solidarity with the Palestinian people towards the exercise of their inalienable rights, as well as its commitment to a two-state solution, in line with the relevant AU decisions and Security Council resolutions.
