Cairo – Mostafa Barakat

The Egyptian Salafi political party al-Nour has denied sacking its president, Emad Abdel Ghafour. General Secretary Hossam al-Khashab declared that Sayed Khalifa did not replace Ghafour. On Tuesday, al-Nour supervisor Yasser Burhami was challenged on television regarding a secret meeting between Burhami and the former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik, who worked for the former regime. The presenter of the al Ashera Masaan show said that this meeting was to arrange “political deals” between the al Nour Party, the Salafis and Shafik in case he wins the elections. This confrontation caused a series of disagreements and mutual accusations inside the Salafi Movement in Alexandria. On Wednesday rumours spread about the sacking of the current president of the party. A Higher Commission member said “we have officially informed the Political Parties Affairs Committee about this decision.” Khashab stressed that Abdel Ghafour is still the head of the party and that anything else claiming the contrary is a lie. “I don’t know who benefits from these rumours, but lately there is a lot of confusion and rumours about the party” he said. Media spokesman of the Salafi party, Dr Mohamed Said denied the rumour too.
