Beirut - George Shahin

Ten injured Syrian citizens were transferred to Lebanese hospitals in Tripoli after crossing from Homs into Lebanon through al-Qaa border town, the National News Agency NNA reported on Saturday. The Lebanese Red Cross helped transporting the injured civilians to the hospitals. Earlier on Saturday, the Red Cross transferred nine wounded Syrians to hospitals in the North. The NNA said that 20 other injured Syrian nationals will be taken in to hospitals in northern Lebanon for treatment. Earlier this month, the Lebanese army reinforced its presence in the northern region of Wadi Khaled, which borders Syria and is close to the flashpoint province of Homs. Some 6,400 Syrians have sought refuge in Lebanon, most of them in Wadi Khaled, since the outbreak nearly a year ago of an unprecedented revolt against the regime of Bashar Assad. A brutal government crackdown to put down the uprising has left more than 7,600 people dead, according to rights groups. The Syrian army in November laced the Lebanese border with landmines in a bid to curb arms smuggling and to hamper army defectors and refugees from fleeing. Syrian troops have also staged deadly incursions into border villages in Lebanon.
