Monitor younger individuals and elders, who are attempting to fast during Ramadan
Muscat - Arab today

Monitor younger individuals and elders, who are attempting to fast during Ramadan, officials have said.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has posted several guidelines regarding the Holy Month of Ramadan, related to health issues, food habits and fitness.

They particularly stressed that families should watch out for elders and children, who are fasting.

“The elderly may have difficulty fasting in Ramadan. It is our responsibility to observe them during fasting and to provide them with fluids at Iftar. Mothers should also watch their children during fasting hours. If a child feels sick or tired, they should break their fast immediately,” the ministry said.

Renal impairment

MoH also recommended that individuals with renal impairment should reduce intake of foods that are rich in sodium, potassium, and phosphorous, and consult their doctors on whether they are able to fast.

“Reduce consumption of foods that are rich with sodium, like table salt, baking powder, and canned or preserved food items. Lessen intake of foods that are high in potassium, like bananas, dates, apricot, raisins and lentil. Foods that are rich in phosphorus, such as red meat, egg whites, flour, carbonated drinks and yogurt should also be lessened.”

The ministry also recommended that all individuals be mindful of their water intake, and should consume between two to three litres of water after Iftar, in intervals, to make up for lost fluids.

It also warned Oman’s community to refrain from smoking and using shisha during this month. “Smoking immediately after Iftar may cause pulmonary embolism and may develop into a tumour in the lungs.

“Let Ramadan be the beginning of your commitment to stop smoking.”

Khatwa initiative

On the other hand, MoH shared the initiative “Khatwa,” which means “step,” and is a national campaign to promote physical activity for all residents of the Sultanate.

The ministry encouraged the inclusion of physical activity in the daily routine throughout Ramadan, including walking, moving, moving and climbing stairs. Finally, it recommended that individuals donate blood during the Holy Month.

“Your blood donation is a charity, as it brings life to others, but also enhances your health,” it said.
