Jakarta - Bernama

Malaysian students in South Sulawesi are safe from the Soputan Volcano eruption, the Malaysian Student Affairs Department in Indonesia said today. Ludinata Misnun, the education attache, said the students were at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, which is about 1,000km from the volcano, situated in North Sulawesi. "We contacted Muhammad Hafiy Mohd Rusli, the student leader there and were informed all 887 Malaysian students were safe and had not felt the impact of the eruption," he said in a statement here Monday. The Soputan Volcano emitted gas and ash 5,000 metres high at 6.03am yesterday. No evacuations were ordered as the nearest inhabitants lived eight kilometers west of the volcano.
