Kandy - KUNA
Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KAFED) has organized a recreational tour for Kuwaiti students of excellent records to the Sri Lankan tourist city of Kandy, which is also distinguished with some of the country's major industries. The high-mark female students, taking part in KFAED's special educational-entertainment program, "be excellent," started their exploration adventure with a visit to Pinnawala Elephants' Orphanage, which is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northwest of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawalla is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to many of the orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC). The students proceeded to a park displaying some of the country's most famous spices and herbs. They also visited a tea factory. Thailand is fourth among the world's top producers of high-quality teas. Tea plants are grown on 400,000 hectares of land. Up to 300,000 persons work in the tea industry. Tea secures 12 percent, some USD 700 million per year, of the country's gross domestic product. The students are due to explore other attractions of the Asian nation in the coming days.
