Cairo - UPI
Hundreds of Egyptians protested in Alexandria over what they said was the torture of a student arrested several days earlier in a demonstration at a university The reported torture revived memories of widespread popular unrest when another student was tortured and died in police custody in 2010, Ahram Online reported. "We will not accept another Khaled Said," protesters chanted Monday in reference to the student killed in June 2010. Pictures of Said's disfigured face were widely distributed and he became an iconic figure during the popular revolution that toppled President Hosni Mubarak. In the latest incident, Emad El-Din Ahmed was arrested several days ago while participating in a demonstration at Alexandria University. While in police custody, he was allegedly tortured. A complaint against the police officer who arrested Ahmed was filed by several of Ahmed's fellow students. Seven people have testified he was beaten while in custody. In the 2010 case, two police officers were convicted in Said's death and sentenced to seven years in prison. A friend of Ahmed's told the Ahram Arabic Web site the police chief in charge of the district where Ahmed was arrested was the same police chief who had been in charge of the district where Said was killed.
