Couple charged with killing teacher

A Vermont couple have been charged with killing a private school teacher whose car was found still running with her toddler son inside, police said Wednesday. Allen Prue, 30, and his wife, Patricia, 33, of Waterford were ordered held without bail after a brief court appearance, The (St. Johnsbury) Caldeonian-Record reported. They were arrested late Tuesday, a day after Melissa Jenkins' body was discovered. Jenkins, 33, taught at St. Johnsbury Academy. Maj. Ed Ledo of the Vermont State Police told a news conference in St. Johnsbury the Prues had plowed Jenkins' driveway in the past. Prue admitted killing Jenkins, Detective Sgt. Walter F. Smith said in an affidavit. He said Patricia Prue denied having anything to do with the killing, although her husband said she assisted him, the Boston Globe reported. A friend of Jenkins said she phoned Sunday evening and reported she "got a weird call from a girl and guy who used to plow her driveway. They said their car broke down near her house." At about 11 p.m., concerned friends looked for Jenkins and found her car with her son, Ty, asleep inside. Ty told investigators his mother had left in a car. He pulled on the back of his neck and said someone had done that to his mother. Jenkins' body was found Monday in Barnet, about 10 miles from St. Johnsbury on the other side of Waterford.
